HistoryOver the past three years, I was required to teach my third grade students about
Lexington, Ky.'s history. I was surprised at this, because I felt like 8 year olds couldn't
possibly understand a concept such as history! I was wrong. Although minimal, I taught
them fascinating facts about their city through a Lexington Virtual Tour on the internet.
Each site contained a photograph and brief description of a special historical feature in
Lexington. After researching our city's history on the computer, the students then created a
brochure about their city. One fold was about the city's history, the second fold was about
physical features of the land, and the third fold was about current attractions of the city.
They thoroughly enjoyed this activity an d learned a lot about their local history.
